Four Types of Smoke Alarms


There are many kind of smoke detectors available. They usually fall under 2 basic categories: Ionization and Photoelectric. You need to determine what you prefer according to where they must to be placed in your abode. They can be used with most smoke alarm systems designed for the deaf. Smoke alarms are pretty expensive, yet they save innumerable lives each year.

Ionization smoke alarms
– The most common category of smoke alarms, and allegedly the most low cost too. They alarm more swiftly when an agile flaming fire occurs, such as an oil/fat fire from the kitchen. It is a bit less sensitive to a smouldering fire when large volume of smoke is present.

Photoelectric (or Optical) smoke alarms
– This type of smoke alarm is quick at sensing blistering fire when smoke is present before flames arise. They are less sensitive to a blazing fire. They are a bit high-priced, but are becoming more widely available at do-it-yourself stores.

Dual sensor smoke alarms
– Smoke alarms that combine ionization and Heat detectors – Heat detectors are not susceptible to smoke, but they detect heat. They are perfect for use in kitchens where you don’t want cooking fumes to set them off. They are costly, and you may not find them available easily as they are not extensively used.



Ionization and photoelectric are both good at detecting different yet possibly lethal fires. Because we cannot anticipate what type of fire or where it might start in our homes, it is highly suggested that we install both photoelectronic and ionization, or dual sensor smoke alarms.
